Max Verstappen defeated Oscar Piastri to win the 2025 Formula 1 world championship, while Lando Norris finished third in the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix final.
Norris began the race 12 points ahead of Verstappen and only needed to finish in the top three to win the championship. Norris managed to maintain third place to win his first world title, despite losing a spot to Piastri on the first lap and thereafter facing intense pressure from Charles Leclerc.
Verstappen had a classic, calm drive to victory; any expected hold-up play did not materialize because Piastri, rather than Norris, was behind him.
In an attempt to win the race, Piastri pursued Verstappen on new media. However, Piastri closed the advantage to 12.6 seconds, but Verstappen’s hard tire performance was sufficient to keep a comfortable lead.
Norris had halted to cover off the Monegasque after batting away Leclerc’s early challenge, which put him under intense scrutiny with DRS. The Briton was left in a sea of traffic as a result, but he was resolute; he quickly cut by Andrea Kimi Antonelli and Alex Albon before making a two-for-one move at Turn 6 to lessen the impact of the runners ahead who had not yet stopped.
The next challenge, though, turned out to be Yuki Tsunoda’s Red Bull. Tsunoda was instructed by his race engineer to “do what you can” in order to hold up Norris. As Norris finished his overtake, Tsunoda forced him off-track by weaving across the course on the straight between Turns 5 and 6. Tsunoda received a five-second penalty for making multiple direction changes, but the stewards decided that the overtake itself was fine.
Leclerc’s early-stint pace against the McLaren started to slow down as Norris was out of the traffic. Norris’s top priority was to cover off Leclerc.
As a result, Norris reacted to keep the lead at almost four seconds, which increased when Leclerc’s tire life started to decline in the last five laps. It was only a matter of Norris hanging on to make sure he won the title. But because of his speed, he was able to catch up to Piastri in just three seconds before being instructed to slow down a bit in the last tours.
Despite pitting and coming out behind, Leclerc was 25s clear of Russell as the Mercedes struggled with degradation after 44 laps on the hard tyre. Aston Martin secured seventh place in the constructors’ championship ahead of Haas thanks to Fernando Alonso, who was a further eighteen seconds behind. Esteban Ocon finished seventh.
Following the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, the Formula 1 grid took to social media to congratulate Lando Norris on winning his first drivers’ championship. While acknowledging that “the allegations are extremely serious,” Carrero’s attorney Jennifer Brown maintained that he is a “very young man with no (criminal record) and a mother willing to take him in.”
